Fear is a major reason why people tend to have problems reaching their goals or it can simply stop you from enjoying life all together. One of the first things you need to do is to make yourself aware of the negative thinking. You need to understand that negative thinking really shouldn't be something that comes natural and the sooner you figure out that this is the truth the easier it's going to be to rid yourself of negative thoughts. So, it's a good idea to make a conscious effort to be alert to what you are thinking at all times. If that means putting up sticky notes to remind you to be aware and alert to negative thinking then do it.
As soon as you realize that you are having a negative thought, immediately stop yourself and take a deep breath and focus on the task at hand. You need to be able to tell yourself that you can accomplish what you are doing and think of a way that you can achieve it instead of saying you are going to fail at it. Use all of your 5 senses to concentrate with when you are trying to find the positive in what you are doing. Listen to the sounds around you, smell the different smells in the air, let yourself be in tune with what's around you and not what's going on inside of your head. By the time you do all of that, more times than not that negative thought is long gone.
Another thing you can do is to get rid of a negative thought by immediately thinking of something positive, something that makes you feel good. If it's a negative thought about something you are doing, then flip it around and think of something you are really good at and how you accomplish that task. This will help you focus on how you can do the thing that is giving you the negative feelings.
It takes practice to replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. But, you need to have patience and continue to do it, even if you don't really believe the positive thought you are thinking. The more times you think about it, the more you will begin to believe it and it will become the truth in your mind.
A good way to make yourself feel positive is to sit down and figure out what all of your strengths are and what your abilities are. Stop focusing on limitations and what you might not be able to do. Instead think of the things that you can do and with success. No matter what you may think, everyone does have something they do great and are or can be successful at. Write all of these things down and keep a list of them posted where you can see these positive things at all times.
By writing down all the positive things that you do or can do is going to affirm in your mind that you are a positive person. Make sure to even include in your list the nice things people have said about you or the compliments you've received on something good you've done.
Don't listen to what others might say about you in a negative light, this is their belief system and not yours to worry about. You should also consider making it a practice to do good things and deeds for other people without expecting anything in return. This helps to build your character and a better feeling about yourself inside.
