All About Auctions - How to Become an Auctioneer


There is more to just calling off the bids at an auction for an auctioneer. These are professionals that have to appraise the valuables or get the service of someone else who can help them with it, they need to convince people to sell things, they are in charge of the advertising and all the other things that go into setting up the auction and they still need to do the bid calling for anywhere from four to six hours. The first thing you should do when you are considering something like this to go to the National Auctioneers Association website. Here you can get an overview of what the world of auctions is all about. It will give you an idea of what auctioneers do and what is expected of them. It will fill you in on how and where you can get training as well.

You should also start attending different kinds of auctions so that you can start to get the feel for what the auctioneer really does and the pace of the work that they do. You can even learn a lot from watching auctions on TV. It's a good idea to get to auctions early and see if you can't get information about being an auctioneer from the auctioneers you come across at the different auctions. They may be able to give you some good resources that can get you started.

You will find a list of auctioneer schools on the NAA website mentioned above. When you get to the list you should check for ones that are closest to you and then get a hold of each school and ask them to send you all the information that they have on their schools and what the requirements are to get in and what it requires to graduate.

It's not as easy as you might think, in today's world an auctioneer has far more education than they use to. A lot of auctioneers actually have full on college degrees that have coursework in public speaking, in marketing, in business and even in acting. You will also need to find out if your state requires auctioneers to not only have a license but also some sort of degree.

When you go to school and then graduate does not mean you will be an auctioneer instantly. You need to understand that you may first have to start off as what is called a ring person. This ring person is the one who is responsible for making sure the bids are confirmed and other smaller details of each auction. This is not to be snubbed, it gives you first hand experience which is something that is needed.

You should also try to focus on a few areas in which you can become an expert at. For example you could focus on art, or antiques, cars, real estate. But don't try to focus on all things. It's best that you specialize in two or three things and then have others around you that can worry about other things. This is the best way to be able to eventually set up your own auction business.
